Because- the graphics arent that great (but ill admit, they got slightly better with the new update) and its full of scammers and spammers and RS does nothing to stop these people or deal with them. It's also full of people who are either braindead (and no offense to you, im not saying you are, im stating my personal experience) or annoying as hell 12 year olds. Or noobs begging for handouts. plus, for some, its addictive and wastes your time.. When you have things you should be doing, or when you just have other more productive things you could be doing besides runescape, your sitting on your @$$ playing RS. your character in game looks like hes built out of blocks.. and when you attack you just wait for them to attack and see little numbers above their heads as they "go at it." Their security is also a joke. Its very easy to compromise and hack. I have a friend who really doesnt know much about security, but knows a lot about computers, and he goes on when hes really bored and hacks people's RS accounts and never gets caught.

if you want to play an awesome game, then you really cant beat WoW.. and if you cant shell out $20 a month, then go mess around on a free private server.. some of those are fun. But if it really comes down to what I think is a good timesink free browser based MMORPG? probably the text-based Lost Power City.

In regards to World of Warcraft - Why the hell would you pay for a game monthly that you've already bought... it's rediculous! I've nothing against others wanting to play it of course, I'm sure it provides a lot of entertainment.
Runescape, back in the day before the graphics upgrades, was a fantastic game. When you were doing quests and actually progressing within the game. I too have not touched my character in years although just the otherday I was thinking of having another go at it. I think I was level 47 or something before I stopped.
